Turing has to wake himself up enough to feed. Basically, that means unswaddling him: wakeup.ASF

Sometimes, he's had just enough so he is actually alert but not drunk: fullofmilk.ASF
If he's alert, he often gets an unfocused gaze as he does the computations necessary for pooping, which happens at the end of this clip. If only I had left the camera running another 5 seconds!: poopthought.ASF

Wow, it has been a week already.

We've got a pretty good routine at home where Billy takes the night shift doing everything except the actual breast feeding until around 6AM, Janel is totally in charge until Billy gets up around 2PM, and the whole family gets to hang out for the afternoon and evening.

Turing had his first doctor's appointment today and is doing great! He's gained a few ounces over his birth weight and everyone was *very* impressed at how calmly he took to all the prodding and how content he seems in general. Everyone has been well fed in the house, too. We finally figured out direct-from-breast feeding on Saturday. There has also been an army of helpful friends who have been/will be bringing over dinners for two weeks. We know it is all a ploy to get some good one-on-one time with Turing, but mom and dad are subsequently eating far better than they do normally. All's good!

3:00pm : We're home!!

Hospital Day "3"

1:30pm : Janel got to breastfeed today and Turing knew just what to do. Good job. He is also out of his spaceship now and in a crib (still in the NICU). It does looks like we'll be taking him home tomorrow if his 3 day culture tests come back good. Woo.

Hospital Day "2"

11:30am : If you'd like to stop by and visit we'll be at the hospital (St. Mary's) at least for today and tomorrow. Between 11am and 10pm is good. Just show up and ask for us at the desk. We're on the 2nd floor.

12:00pm : If you're wondering where the name comes from.. He's named after Alan Turing.

3:30pm : Finally. More pics.
He's been in the spaceship because he had crap in his lungs. He was on some oxygen until this morning, but has now been completely weened from it. His cool Darth Vader breathing is gone now too.





6:00pm : Feeding time. He will be breastfeeding as soon as he's off his IV (hopefully tomorrow night).

8:30pm : We're now on a schedule where we go visit the NICU to change and feed him every 3 hours. This last time he did such a good job with his bottle that they turned his IV down. What a champ. btw. Don't be shy to come visit. If we are not in the room, we're at the NICU down the hall.

Birthing saga

11:00pm : It's a go. We're going to stay the night.

8:30am : Waiting around for the pitocin.
2:00pm : Contractions still getting stronger. Apparently birthball + shower = magic.

6:30pm : Well.. Same as before. She's been at 2.5cm dilation for some time. Though she's at station -1 now.

10:30pm : Well again.. 2.5cm still. Turing is being a punk already! They placed some internal probes to get more accurate readings because the external sensors suck. As expected.. Janel is tough as nails and had been giving very hard 80/90+ contractions for hours. You only need 50+ baseline (15) to begin pushing, but that's only good enough if you are dilated enough. She's exhausted and now an narcotics. They've cranked the pitocin down a little and she's contracting at nicer intervals now. Hopefully the next dilation check shows some progress. Turing's got my labor punkness already beat. I was "only" 11 hours I hear.

Oct 17, 2005

7:00am : They just put an epidural in. She's continues making slow progress. 100% effaced and 4cm. As long as progress is made and the baby is strong, they'll keep this up. Otherwise it'll be a c-section.

11:30am : Progressing slowly. The head is coming down and she's at 5cm or 6cm now. Janel's been able to sleep through the contractions now too.

12:00pm : The trooper gives a thumbs up.

2:30pm : Getting closer. 8cm. Station 0.

5:00pm : Very close now. 9.5cm. Still station 0.

6:00pm : Woo. 10cm. They'll probably have her start pushing in an hour.

8:00pm : Ok. Time to start pushing. The phone is off now.

11:27pm : He's here. 3527 grams (7lbs 12oz), 57 centimeters (20.5 inches)
